UWA Irwin Street Building

The “Irwin Street Building” is the oldest building on University of Western Australia [UWA] campus, originally  located on Irwin Street in the centre of Perth, it was moved to the current site in 1987. Presently used as the cricket pavilion and heritage office. I drew this in black pencil in a Clairefontaine notebook sitting on a bench under the trees, very pleasant.

Notes from https://www.web.uwa.edu.au/university/history/archive-collections/irwin-street…..

“A T-shaped jarrah building constructed in 1913 provided the University’s original accommodation on this site. It was not quite complete when teaching started on 31 March 1913. Professor AD Ross, Foundation Professor of Mathematics and Physics commented that: “…the first building we got was certainly original in more senses than one. It was a jarrah shed, 110 feet long by 20 feet wide … We estimated that the building would be ready for a start on the 16 March, then 21 March, then 23 March, and finally it must be 31 March. Members of staff, at the risk of their lives, would go in and pin up notes on doors: ‘Department of Geology’ or the like. Since one of the little rooms had already been commandeered for the janitor, the telephone, electric switchboard, brooms, mops and buckets, it was evident that eleven departments must share six rooms.”

Cottesloe Beach – the old timber jetty appears ?

Autumn tides have shifted the sand around the local beaches exposing limestone reefs and ripping up old seaweed in great heaps on the beach. But today I saw something that I’ve never spotted before….old wooden post and rail with large iron bolts sticking out of the sand just in front of the Indiana Tea House on Cottesloe beach. It seems this wood could be part of the original Cottesloe Jetty built in 1906 to make it easier for fishos to get out past the reef and allow people to “promenade” as was the thing to do in those days. Unfortunately it was fairly short lived as the pylons were damaged by boring mollusc and later winter storms. The jetty was eventually condemned and blown up in 1952 with gelignite.

A TALE OF TWO JETTIES

Finally a quick scribble with pen and coloured pencils, looking North….

Marine Parade, Cottesloe

A beautiful balmy Autumn afternoon down at the Indian Ocean on Marine Parade, Cottesloe. The sea was really calm, a few people about – dog walking, stand-up paddle boarding, a scuba diver, some swimming and a few disappointed surfers (tiny swell). The water looked so inviting, pity I forgot my bathers…..next time….

A quick sketch below of Pakenham Street, Fremantle, the big cranes of the wharf on the horizon.

#TypeClubWA – workshop at Claremont Goods Shed

At the Claremont Goods Shed this morning for a gathering of the #typeclubwa – people interested in hand lettering, font styles and graphic design. Lots of different types of pens, brushpens, textas, pencils, watercolour – creating lots of different writing styles…. some curly and wandering…. others angular and edgy. I had fun scribbling on the paper covered table but even more fun sketching the people down the table as they created their “words of art”.
